Task 3 Process Document
Purpose of Product
The purpose for this video is to teach students a lesson on multiplying three digit numbers by two digit numbers. This lesson meets the Florida standard “fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm” CPALMS, 2015).
Audience
The audience for my product is for my fourth grade students. Students have finished learning the fourth grade math standards and have mastered multiplying two digit by two digit numbers, therefore the school is beginning to teach fifth grade skills that build on the fourth grade curriculum. The students will begin learning how to multiply three digit by two digit numbers within the next few weeks as the students are beginning to work on fifth grade standards. Therefore, my audience would be to students that are ending the fourth grade within the next two months. The students are 10 years old.
Software
I used Windows Movie Maker program to capture my video and edit it before putting it on YouTube. I used my webcam to record my videos audio and visual parts. I used this software because it had a feature to use my webcam. I was able to record directly from my webcam and recorded my audio at the same time. I have used this software in other projects so I was familiar with this software and it was on my computer. The video was also able to be edited with features such as a trimming tool to delete anything I did not like, i.e. background noise or pauses. There is also a conversion feature on this software that allowed me to upload onto YouTube easily.
Process
I created my multimedia product by opening the Windows Movie Maker program. Next I clicked on “webcam video”. I then pressed the “record” button to film myself once I was set up for recording with my marker board and camera. After I was finished teaching a portion of my lesson, I hit the “stop” button which triggered a save screen pop up box. I clicked on the save button and the video file was put on the right side of a two section screen, with the left side showing a video preview of my file. I then clicked on “edit” to select the “trim” button that I would use to delete any portion of my filming I was not going to use in my final product. I broke my lesson into segments to allow myself time to edit out pauses, background noise, or errors in dialogue. I then would repeat my steps to continue filming. After I finished the lesson, I clicked on “edit” again to add a title page to my video to capture the objective of the lesson through a screen with the words on it. I clicked the second setting in the “AutoMovie themes” section to do this. By adding this title page, the program added a divider between my video save spots. The divider screen caused the videos to slide onto the screen after the previous take was finished.
Conceptual Framework
The conceptual framework helped in my design and development process. The software I used to create my storyboard product was called “storyboard that”. On this website I was able to make the panels to plan out my video with images and text of what I would say and write. I chose to use the storyboard program because I wanted to be able to write out my dialogue and what I would write on the marker board—having a clear distinction between the speaking and the writing without having to write “I would write” or making notes of writing. This program allowed me to show my plans in a clear set up. I am also a visual learner so I wanted a way to plan out my video using pictures of speech and where my writing would be (on a marker board). A flow chart would have been either too much writing or not able to capture dialogue and the marker board as they are used primarily as small notes to self.
This storyboard helped in my design and development process by allowing me to visually see the math problem steps I would need to explain on the camera and work out what I would say. I edited the storyboard three times, noticing errors in the math and the text I was writing. This means that I was able to use my storyboard to check my work before I began taping my lesson to my students. Storyboard creation is therefore important to use in developing a video because it allows for planning and revising content that will be shown in a video.
